A Pinot Noir of character between Volnay and Meursault

The Monthélie 2023, selected by the Prince and Princess of Bourbon-Parme, is an elegant and structured Pinot Noir from the confidential Monthélie appellation, a small village nestled between Volnay and Meursault on the Côte de Beaune. With only 140 hectares of vines, Monthélie is one of the most intimate appellations of Burgundy, producing reds of remarkable finesse that remain too little known to enthusiasts.

This cuvée bears the signature of two great families: the Mac Mahon family — Duc de Magenta — owners of the Abbaye de Morgeot since the 19th century, and the House of Bourbon-Parme, with whom they share close family ties. The Prince and Princess have personally selected the parcels and overseen the ageing of this exceptional cuvée, drawn from vines between 30 and 45 years old planted on limestone soils.

Available in 75cl bottle and 150cl magnum, this Monthélie offers an excellent gateway to the great reds of the Côte de Beaune. Its ageing potential of 5 to 8 years also makes it a wise choice for collectors seeking to build a quality Burgundian cellar at reasonable prices.

Tasting notes

The eye

A deep cherry-red robe with violet highlights, of fine density, speaking of the youth and concentration of the 2023 vintage. The disc is clean and bright, the sign of optimal ripeness.

The nose

An alluring, complex bouquet of black fruits — blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry — alongside floral notes of violet and sweet spices. A characteristic mineral touch and gentle hints of forest floor are also perceptible.

The palate

A frank, fruity attack, with present yet silky tannins that give the wine its elegant structure. The mid-palate is ample and juicy, the persistent finish lingering on notes of black cherry and liquorice.

The Monthélie appellation and the Bourbon-Parme selection

Monthélie is a village appellation of the Côte de Beaune, set between Volnay and Meursault, two of Burgundy's most prestigious names. This small, confidential village produces red Pinot Noir wines of remarkable elegance, on limestone soils and hillsides with varied exposures that encourage slow, even ripening of the grapes. The altitude and orientation of the parcels lend freshness and complexity to the wines of Monthélie, often compared to Volnay for their finesse and silky texture.

The "Prince de Bourbon-Parme" selection reflects the family ties uniting the Mac Mahon family with the House of Bourbon-Parme. This alliance between two great French lineages is expressed through an absolute insistence on the choice of parcels and on vinification. The result is a Monthélie at once noble and accessible, the reflection of a still little-known terroir capable of holding its own with its illustrious neighbours of Volnay and Pommard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Monthélie appellation?

Monthélie is a confidential village appellation of the Côte de Beaune, nestled between Volnay and Meursault. With only 140 hectares of vines, it is one of the smallest appellations of the region. The limestone soils and varied exposures yield elegant, structured Pinot Noirs, often compared to Volnay for their finesse, at significantly more accessible prices.

Who are the Bourbon-Parme associated with this cuvée?

The Prince and Princess of Bourbon-Parme are linked by family ties to the Mac Mahon family, Duc de Magenta, the historic owner of the Abbaye de Morgeot. They have personally selected this Monthélie cuvée, which represents Burgundian excellence in a style at once noble and accessible.

Is this Monthélie comparable to a Volnay?

Monthélie shares similarities with neighbouring Volnay: the same Pinot Noir grape, comparable limestone soils and a finesse characteristic of the Côte de Beaune. However, Monthélie has its own identity, with wines that are often a little more structured and with more pronounced black-fruit notes. It offers excellent value for money to discover the Côte de Beaune style.
