Domaine du Duc de Magenta Profile — Burgundy Report

Full range of Duchesse de Magenta wines on green marble, white and red Burgundy

The leading reference site Burgundy Report has devoted a detailed profile to Domaine du Duc de Magenta, shining a light on one of the most singular estates in the Côte de Beaune. With its 12 hectares spread between Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, the domaine occupies a place apart in the Burgundian landscape, both for the depth of its history and the quality of its terroirs.

The Mac Mahon family, Dukes of Magenta, has farmed these lands since 1750. Nearly three centuries of unbroken family stewardship have preserved an exceptional viticultural heritage, notably the Clos de la Garenne within the Premier Cru Morgeot and the monopole of Clos de la Garenne in Puligny-Montrachet. These parcels, handed down from generation to generation, form the very heart of the estate.

The terroir of Chassagne-Montrachet, where the Abbaye de Morgeot stands, is shaped by complex clay-limestone soils, rich in marine fossils and Kimmeridgian marls. These soils give the white wines a profound minerality and a remarkable capacity for ageing. In Puligny, the purer limestones bring greater tension and finesse, providing a perfect counterpart to the Chassagne register.

What truly sets the domaine apart is the marriage of its monastic history — the Abbaye de Morgeot dates back to the twelfth century — with the rigour of its contemporary viticulture. The wines are aged and distributed by the house of Louis Jadot, ensuring impeccable winemaking while preserving the identity of each parcel.

Burgundy Report concludes that Domaine du Duc de Magenta offers privileged access to some of the most sought-after Premier Cru terroirs in Burgundy, at prices that remain reasonable in light of the quality on offer. An address that discerning enthusiasts would do well to discover.
