Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne

The jewel of the Abbaye de Morgeot, the Clos de la Garenne is a monopole of the estate, a rarity in the Burgundian winegrowing landscape. Set at the heart of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation in the Côte de Beaune, this Premier Cru embodies the very essence of the limestone terroir that has built the worldwide reputation of the great white Burgundies. Here Chardonnay finds a singular expression, marrying mineral purity with aromatic complexity, the fruit of expertise handed down by the Mac Mahon family, Duc de Magenta, since the 19th century.

The 2022 vintage offers a remarkable balance between richness and freshness. The vines, between 35 and 50 years old, have produced grapes of exceptional concentration, vinified with the precision that characterises the domaine. Ageing in French oak barrels for 12 to 16 months, one third of which are new, lends a subtle oak nuance without ever masking the expression of the terroir. This great cellaring wine ranks among the most sought-after cuvées of the Côte de Beaune, prized by enlightened amateurs and collectors the world over.

The robe is a brilliant pale gold with green highlights, a sign of youth and vitality. This Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru represents a confidential production of around 4,000 bottles a year, a testament to the estate's exacting quality standards and to the limited size of this exceptional clos.

The terroir

Vine rows on limestone soil, Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne terroir

The Clos de la Garenne is a high-altitude terroir set on the hillside of Puligny-Montrachet, one of the most prestigious villages of the Côte de Beaune for the production of exceptional white wines. The very limestone-rich, shallow soils force the Chardonnay vines to root deeply into the fissured Jurassic bedrock. This deep search allows the roots to draw out a unique mineral complexity, the true signature of the great Puligny-Montrachets.

The south-easterly exposure ensures optimal sunlight throughout the day, encouraging slow and even ripening of the grapes. The clay-limestone marls of the subsoil bring that aromatic richness and silky texture so characteristic of the cru. The status of monopole clos guarantees a uniformity of cultivation and vinification impossible to achieve on shared parcels, making each vintage a faithful witness to this remarkable terroir.

Frequently asked questions

What is a clos monopole in Burgundy?

A clos monopole is a parcel of vines entirely enclosed by walls and owned by a single proprietor. The Clos de la Garenne is the exclusive monopole of the Abbaye de Morgeot estate in Puligny-Montrachet, guaranteeing a unique and inimitable wine, the faithful expression of a singular terroir cultivated by one family alone.

How long can a Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne be cellared?

The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne has an excellent ageing potential of 8 to 12 years. The 2022 vintage, with its fine acidity and remarkable mineral structure, can be enjoyed now after decanting, but it will gain in complexity over time.

How should Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne be served?

Serve this Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru between 12 and 14°C in a white Burgundy glass. Decanting for 30 minutes is recommended to release the wine's full aromatic complexity. Avoid serving it too cold, which would mask its delicate aromas of white flowers and toasted hazelnut.
