Bourgogne blanc Les Houillères

The ideal gateway to the wines of the Abbaye de Morgeot estate, this Bourgogne blanc comes from the lieu-dit Les Houillères on the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. Although it carries the regional Bourgogne appellation, this Chardonnay benefits from a terroir and craftsmanship that place it well above the standards of its category. The Mac Mahon family, Duc de Magenta, vinifies it with the same care and rigour as its Premier Cru cuvées.

The 2022 vintage has produced a fresh, expressive and generous wine. Hand-harvesting and selective sorting ensure impeccable fruit quality. Vinification, carried out in stainless-steel tanks to preserve the freshness of the fruit and partially in oak barrels to add a touch of complexity, delivers a white Burgundy just as it should be: sincere, generous and precise.

With production of around 10,000 bottles per year, this Bourgogne blanc Les Houillères is the estate's most accessible cuvée. Its outstanding value makes it an ideal companion for everyday meals and for larger convivial gatherings alike. Also available in magnum (150cl) for moments to be shared.

The terroir

Abbaye de Morgeot estate surrounded by vines, Bourgogne blanc Les Houillères terroir

The lieu-dit Les Houillères lies on the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. Although this wine carries the regional Bourgogne appellation, it benefits from the immediate proximity of the great terroirs of Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet. The clay-limestone soils, inherited from Jurassic deposits, give the Chardonnay a freshness and minerality that are remarkable for a wine of this category.

Vinification is carried out in stainless-steel tanks and oak barrels, preserving the freshness of the fruit while adding a touch of complexity. This Bourgogne blanc reflects the uncompromising commitment to quality of the Mac Mahon family, Duc de Magenta, right through to its most accessible cuvées. The vines, aged 20 to 35 years, are tended using sustainable viticulture, out of respect for the terroir and the environment.

Frequently asked questions

Does this Bourgogne blanc really come from Chassagne-Montrachet?

Yes, this Bourgogne blanc comes from the lieu-dit Les Houillères on the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. Although it carries the regional Bourgogne appellation (rather than the village appellation Chassagne-Montrachet), the vines benefit from direct proximity to the great terroirs of Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet, which gives it remarkable quality for a wine of this category.

Why is this Bourgogne blanc €20 when others are cheaper?

This Bourgogne blanc Les Houillères is vinified with the same care as our Premier Crus: hand-harvesting, selective sorting, vinification in stainless-steel tanks and oak barrels. It comes from vines on the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet, benefiting from an exceptional clay-limestone terroir. This level of rigour and this prestigious provenance justify a price above that of a standard Bourgogne blanc, while remaining very accessible.

How should I store this Bourgogne blanc Les Houillères?

Store the bottle on its side in a cool place (12-14°C), away from light and vibration, with humidity of 70-80%. A natural cellar or a wine fridge are ideal. This Bourgogne blanc can be kept for 3 to 5 years, but is also delicious straight away for its freshness and vibrant fruit.
