Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot

The estate's eponymous wine, the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot comes from the historic parcels that adjoin the Cistercian abbey founded in 1150. This emblematic Premier Cru of the Côte de Beaune carries within it eight centuries of Burgundian winegrowing tradition. The Cistercian monks were the first to identify the exceptional potential of this Chassagne-Montrachet terroir, and the Mac Mahon family, Duc de Magenta, has passionately upheld this heritage since the 19th century.

The 2020 vintage, generous and sun-drenched, has given rise to a wine of remarkable power and complexity. This Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru masterfully combines breadth and finesse, strength and elegance. Traditional vinification in French oak barrels, followed by 14 to 18 months of ageing — one third of which in new oak — has allowed the expression of this exceptional terroir to be sublimated without ever masking it.

With a production limited to around 3,500 bottles per year, this ageworthy wine reflects the demanding pursuit of quality that drives the Abbaye de Morgeot estate. Every bottle tells the story of a unique place where Cistercian heritage and viticultural excellence meet at the heart of the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation.

The terroir

The lieu-dit Morgeot is the historic cradle of the estate, one of the most renowned terroirs in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation in the Côte de Beaune. The Cistercian monks planted the first vines here in the 12th century, discovering a soil of exceptional geological richness. The Bathonian limestone marls, formed more than 165 million years ago, give the wine its aromatic richness and that profound minerality which sets the great Chassagne-Montrachets apart.

The south-east exposure on a gently sloping hillside ensures natural drainage and ideal sunlight for Chardonnay. The vines, between 40 and 60 years old, benefit from deep rooting in the bedrock, which allows them to withstand the vagaries of the climate and to produce grapes of remarkable concentration. This unique terroir, where Cistercian heritage and precision viticulture come together, gives birth each year to one of the most expressive Premiers Crus of Chassagne-Montrachet.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the wine named after the Abbaye de Morgeot?

This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru bears the name of the Abbaye de Morgeot because the parcels it comes from sit directly alongside the Cistercian abbey founded in 1150. The Cistercian monks were the first to plant vines on this terroir in the 12th century. The Mac Mahon family, Duc de Magenta, has carried on this thousand-year-old winegrowing tradition since the 19th century.

What makes the 2020 vintage different from other years?

The 2020 vintage is regarded as generous and sun-drenched in Burgundy. It produced white wines of remarkable power and concentration, with exceptional grape ripeness. This Chassagne-Montrachet 2020 stands out for its breadth on the palate and its aromatic richness, while preserving the freshness and minerality characteristic of the Morgeot terroir.

Should a Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru be decanted?

Yes, decanting for around one hour is strongly recommended for this Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 2020. This aeration allows the wine to release its full aromatic complexity and to soften its structure. Serve it between 13 and 15°C in a white Burgundy glass for an optimal tasting experience.
