An authentic Pinot Noir from the lieu-dit Les Champans

The Bourgogne Rouge Les Champans 2022 is a Pinot Noir of character, from the lieu-dit Les Champans on the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune. This confidential lieu-dit, planted with vines between 25 and 40 years old, lies on clay-limestone soils that give the wine its characteristic roundness and generous fruit. The Abbaye de Morgeot estate, owned by the Mac Mahon family since the 19th century, cultivates Pinot Noir here with the rigour and respect for terroir that are the hallmarks of great Burgundies.

Vinified after a fully manual harvest and berry-by-berry sorting, this red Burgundy benefits from a 12 to 15 day maceration with gentle pumping over, followed by 10 to 12 months of ageing in oak barrels. This precise vinification, respectful of the fruit, yields a wine that is at once expressive in its youth and gifted with fine ageing potential.

Available in 75cl bottle and 150cl magnum, the Bourgogne Rouge Les Champans is a sharing wine par excellence. The magnum format encourages a slower and more harmonious evolution of the wine, ideal for large gatherings and festive meals with family or friends.

Tasting notes

The eye

A bright ruby robe, of medium and luminous intensity, typical of the fine Pinot Noirs of the Côte de Beaune. Garnet highlights are beginning to appear at the rim, the sign of fully ripe fruit.

The nose

An expressive and charming bouquet of red cherry, fresh raspberry and redcurrant, lifted by subtle notes of sweet spices — cinnamon and white pepper — and a gentle oak touch from the barrel ageing.

The palate

A fruity, silky attack, fine and well-integrated tannins that wrap the palate with elegance. The structure is harmonious, never heavy, and the finish lingers on fresh red fruit and a pleasant peppery touch.

The Pinot Noir terroir of Chassagne-Montrachet

Pinot Noir is the king of Burgundy's red grapes. On the limestone and clay soils of the Côte de Beaune, it produces wines of unrivalled elegance and finesse. The lieu-dit Les Champans, in Chassagne-Montrachet — a village famous for its great whites but whose reds long remained a closely guarded secret — offers a terroir particularly well suited to Pinot Noir, with deeper, more clay-rich soils that bring roundness and generosity to the wine.

At the Abbaye de Morgeot, vinification is conducted with precision and patience. Hand-harvesting preserves the integrity of the bunches, while a gentle maceration and measured ageing in oak barrels respect the natural expression of the fruit. The result is an authentic red Burgundy, faithful to its Chassagne-Montrachet terroir and immediately appealing in its early years.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Pinot Noir light or powerful?

The Bourgogne Rouge Les Champans 2022 sits in a middle register, typical of the fine Pinot Noirs of the Côte de Beaune. It offers an elegant structure with fine, well-integrated tannins and an expressive fruit of cherry and raspberry, without ever becoming heavy. It is a silky, generous wine, accessible in its youth but with an ageing potential of 3 to 6 years.

Should this red Burgundy be decanted?

Decanting is optional. If you open it in its youth, 30 minutes in a decanter will let the aromas blossom fully. If the wine has a few years of bottle age, simply serving it in a Burgundy glass at 15-17°C will be enough to reveal its full aromatic palette.

Which cheeses go with this red Burgundy?

This Pinot Noir pairs magnificently with Burgundy's soft, washed-rind cheeses: Époisses, Cîteaux, Ami du Chambertin. Its suppleness and fruit perfectly balance the creamy, powerful character of these cheeses.
