Great Montrachets are becoming a rarity: position yourself early

White Chassagne-Montrachet bottle and glass on stone table, autumn vineyard

The market for great white Burgundies is experiencing unprecedented tension. According to specialist analysts, bottles of Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru are growing increasingly rare on secondary markets. Stocks of mature vintages are dwindling rapidly, while global demand continues to climb, driven by new collectors in Asia and North America.

This scarcity is the result of several converging factors. First, yields in Burgundy have been hit by repeated climatic setbacks — spring frosts, hail, drought — significantly reducing volumes produced over several consecutive vintages. Second, the area planted to Premier and Grand Cru is by definition limited and cannot be extended. Finally, immediate consumption absorbs an ever-growing share of production, leaving fewer bottles to age in cellars.

For seasoned collectors, the Premiers Crus of Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet today represent a remarkable opportunity. Less in the spotlight than emblematic Grands Crus such as Le Montrachet or Chevalier-Montrachet, they nevertheless offer comparable terroir quality and complexity, at prices that remain accessible. The Duc de Magenta's Abbaye de Morgeot Premier Cru and Clos de la Garenne Premier Cru illustrate this potential perfectly.

Market data show that prices for the white Premiers Crus of the Côte de Beaune have risen steadily over the past ten years, with marked acceleration since 2020. Wines from historic estates — those holding monopole parcels or named clos — benefit from an additional premium tied to their authenticity and the traceability of their provenance.

Against this backdrop, acquiring Premiers Crus of Domaine du Duc de Magenta directly from the estate is a sound strategy. These wines combine a historic pedigree reaching back to the twelfth century, terroirs ranked among the finest in Burgundy, and a deliberately limited production that guarantees their future rarity.
